Injury roundup: Steelers could tumble in AFC

20. listopadu 2012 v 1:51 | news articles
"Next man up" only works as a philosophy when the next man up is capable. That's why one injury we learned about Monday stands apart from the rest.
The Pittsburgh Steelers can't afford to fall behind any more in the AFC North. Backup quarterbackByron Leftwich's broken ribs will thrust 37-year-old No. 3 quarterback Charlie Batch into the spotlightfor a team that is desperately in search of wins. Suddenly, a game against the Cleveland Brownslooks like a toss up. Playing the Baltimore Ravens away the following week sounds like a disaster ifBen Roethlisberger can't get healthy. The Steelers could be staring at 6-6.
The New England Patriots, on the other hand, have a three game lead in the AFC East. They can survive Rob Gronkowski's injury. They have Aaron Hernandez ready to return from an ankle injury and Visanthe Shiancoe coming off the bench. Gronkowski, who underwent surgery on his broken forearm Monday, should be back in New England's lineup before the games really count for them again. NFL.com's Albert Breer thinks Gronk will push to return as soon as Week 14.
The Denver Broncos can similarly survive running back Willis McGahee's knee injury. They have a cushion in the AFC West and a talented backup in Ronnie Hillman. Most running backs are ultimately replaceable and there's a decent chance McGahee will be back for the playoffs.
All of the injuries above are costly, but Pittsburgh's problems stand out. They were forced to call on Plaxico Burress because Antonio Brown (ankle) andJerricho Cotchery (rib) are hurt. That's the act of a desperate team. Steelersneed help -- and some tough wins -- to avoid tumbling in the AFC standings.
Here are the rest of the injuries we'll be tracking all week on Around the League:
1. Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) and Tyron Smith (ankle) are not expected to play on Thanksgiving, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
2. Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartzannounced Monday that wide receiverTitus Young will be inactive onThanksgiving against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday because of behavior issues. Left tackle Jeff Backus (hamstring) is expected to miss the first game of his 12-year career.
3. Washington Redskins safetyBrandon Meriweather's star-crossed season ended on injured reserveMonday after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his first game of the year.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert (elbow) may be healthy enough to play this week, but Chad Henne will start at quarterback anyhow. Running back Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) is also expected to miss another week.
5. Bad news for the Minnesota Vikings, wide receiver Percy Harvin wasn't able to practice because of his injured ankle as the team returned from its bye.
6. Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson (concussion) hasn't been cleared by doctors yet.
7. The Arizona Cardinals are expected to activate running back Beanie Wells from I.R. this week, making him the first player in NFL history "designated to return" under the new rules to actually return.
8. Michael Vick and LeSean McCoyhave not yet made any progress with their post-concussion testing with thePhiladelphia Eagles training staff. Coach Andy Reid believes McCoy's injury is not as severe.
