Hibbett Sports Inc.'s Mickey Newsome has vast sports memorabilia Detroit Lions #9 collection (photos, video)

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Whenever Mickey Newsome continues company business, he puts a number of baseballs in their briefcase. He never knows who he might come upon. The longtime president and leader -- now executive chairman on the board -- for Birmingham-based Hibbett Sports Inc., has for some time collected sports memorabilia, with much of it now filling every corner of his company's corporate office. His collection may be built through his connections in the sports industry and also nearly 40 years of Saturday morning trips to flea markets, estate sales and yard sales Cheap Drew Brees Jersey. It ranges from signed jerseys pictures of today's stars -- Cam Newton and Nick Saban among them -- to relics like leather football helmets and lace-up basketballs. The baseball thing started about two-and-a-half decades ago, when Newsome kept running into sports figures at industry meetings and had nothing to allow them to sign. Now, he's always prepared, and it also often settles. Last summer, when he what food was in Might to the All-Star Game, he spotted baseball great Hank Aaron with the airport but got him to sign a ball. "There we were both waiting about the same flight. He guesses he has countless balls right now, signed by Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Nolan Ryan, Bo Jackson and other notable names in sports. Political and entertainment figures are likewise target, as Newsome has garnered signatures from George W. Bush, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mitt Romney, Kathy Ireland and more Detroit Lions #9. But it is the weekend trips to flea markets, estate sales and yard sales over the Southeast that comprise Newsome's collection. "Oahu is the thrill on the hunt," he was quoted saying. "Your going on the Saturday morning, for 3 to 4 hours, and you'll not buy anything. You meet people and you dig. It's actually a social event." In recent times, Newsome has made friends around the treasure-hunting circuit, and in addition they all watch out for one another. "You see exactly the same people. One guy collects Elvis records, one guy collects old car tags. Everybody has their specialty. Easily see a well used car tag, I'll have it and send it to him," he explained. Are you a collector? Share your own personal finds at photos.al.com/photogallery Newsome started collecting inside 1970s, influenced by his former boss, Ike Hibbett, who collected antiques. Right now, a tour with the Hibbett headquarters off Lakeshore Parkway is like walking through a sports museum. In reality, that's exactly what Newsome intends to do using the collection the coming year, when Hibbett moves its corporate office and distribution center, now all during one site Cheap Aaron Rodgers Jersey. Winding from the halls and stairwells, you will find signed photos and jerseys everywhere: Mia Hamm, Allen Iverson, Pat Sullivan, Ozzie Newsome, Matt Hasselbeck, Joe Montana and Frank Thomas one of them. Other treasures certainly are a Green Bay Packers helmet signed by Bart Starr, a good signed by Joe DiMaggio, a baseball glove signed by Whitey Ford, many wooden tennis rackets, almost all the editions of Sports Illustrated, old ballplayer contracts, college fight song records, a bag of dirt from behind home in the original Yankee Stadium and some houndstooth hats. Some of the memorabilia is organized, because office conference rooms are named: the Bear Bryant room, the Muhammad Ali Room, the Bobby Bowden Room and others. Fittingly, the property Run Room has a wall of old baseball gloves, along with the Birdie Room is filled with golf gear. Olympic memorabilia is a big section of the collection, too. Newsome continues to be to many Olympics and saved tickets, pins and other paraphernalia NFL. A brief history buff, he also combines the love of that subject with sports: He's a number of photos, books and also other collectibles in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. A number of Newsome's collection is a direct result of his post at Hibbett. Vendors will be taught he's a collector and send him things; he also turns a cheap poster into something more when he asks a player he knows to sign it. Jeff Rosenthal, Hibbett's leader, said a workplace filled with sports memorabilia is appropriate for the sports company. "Vendors and individuals from on vacation want to find it," he was quoted saying. Generally, Newsome is bargain hunting for his finds -- he usually doesn't buy something unless he gets a lot. He admits to a couple of splurges, however. But Newsome isn't considering dealing with the overall value of his collection. Then when asked to venture a guess, he quipped, "You seem like my estate lawyer." As full as Hibbett's headquarters has become, you will find more sports memorabilia that is displayed, another reason why behind the museum plan. Newsome estimates which he has about few times more stuff held in a warehouse. Newsome readily admits that his hobby can be quite a bit much: "It's a disease," he explained Cheap Mark Sanchez Jersey.
